I’ve always enjoyed looking at a handsome dalmatian dog. With
their unique coating of white with black or brown spots all over their body is
just amazing. I know I sound like Cruella de Vil from ‘101 dalmatians’ but I’m
not like her, because I don’t hunt for their coats. But if you do see one at a
dog show, you will be in love with it and will start counting your money so you
can get one. But don’t, don’t ever rush into buying a pet and end up with
abandoning it. So let’s get started with a few simple guidelines in identifying
one.
As I said before, their coating is short, white with black
or brown spots all over. It is considered a medium-sized dog and will normally
weight from 35 to 65 pounds at full grown. The dalmatian has round feet with
well-arched toes and the nails are usually white or the same color as the
spots. It has thin ears that taper towards the tip and are set fairly high and
close to the head. Interesting thing is that their puppies do not have any
spots until they are at 2 to 3 weeks of age. Dalmatians need grooming even
though they have very short coats. Well, every dog needs some amount of
grooming anyway, so be prepared for the work.
These spotty dogs were once use as coaching dogs that guides
horses that pulls a carriage, but not nowadays. We use them as pets, guard
dogs, rescue dogs, and even mascots for firefighters. They are also successful
as circus dogs due to their interesting coating. They are said to be very
energetic and love to help out or follow you around so they are suitable for
work. Dalmatians are also known for excessive barking, means you need ear
plugs, no I was joking, what you really need is proper obedience training for
your dog.
Some might say that dalmatians are not smart, but what they
didn’t know was that dalmatians have hearing problems; only 70% of them can hear
you properly. If you call yours and it doesn’t come to you, it might just mean that
it’s deaf, or you’re just not training it enough.
So you’re interested in one? Don’t go running to the pet
shop just yet. Do your research and look into it, be responsible towards your
pet, they are friends that never judge.
